Mark Teh

About him:

Mark Teh is a performance maker, researcher and curator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His diverse, collaborative projects address issues of history, memory, and counter-mappings – often taking on documentary and speculative forms. His projects have recently been presented at MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai (2020), Salihara, Jakarta (2019), Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (2019), TPAM, Yokohama (2019), BIPAM, Bangkok (2018). OzAsia Festival, Adelaide (2018), Fast Forward Festival, Athens (2018), MMCA Seoul (2018), SPIELART Festival, Munich (2017), Haus de Kulturen de Welt, Berlin (2017), amongst others. Mark is a member of Five Arts Centre, a collective of artists, producers and activists.

Mark started with theatre when he was a literature student in Taylor’s college. Both theatrical performances and political performances was equally invigorating for him at that young age.
Mark shares about his project ‘The complete future of Malaysia’, which comes in several different chapters. He shares about the process and the collaboration with others and the different events of the projects.
Mark enjoy the most in the research part, enjoy taking the time thinking how that research could manifest itself in different ways. All art forms have their limitations and strengths.
Mark shares that his path towards making performance was always through non-trained means. What’s really important is their own perspective towards the subject that they research together.
Unlike most theatres, performers tend to want to impress the audience or seek for approval, Mark’s approach is to meet the audiences as equals.
Mark says that having the opportunity to present artworks in different context is always useful and valuable.
He says that it is really good to be able to share and compare contexts. We can learn a lot from our neighbours, particularly other South-East Asian countries, because we share similar problems and face the same kind of challenges.
Mark says there are many ways to have a life in the performing arts.
Mark’s advice is to pay attention to what no one else are paying attention to, enjoy problems, work with problems and make the problems productive.
