About him:

Ng Chor Guan is an artist, music composer, co-founder and artistic director of Toccata Studio. His diverse body of work is rooted in the contemporaneous currents of technology and yet proves to transcend categories in the performing arts. Guan’s film music was awarded Grand Prize in Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival (France, 2009) and Art film Fest (Slovakia, 2010). He was awarded Berlinale Talents (Germany) and OneBeat fellowship (U.S.A). Guan was the musical director of Dance North Australia’s 30th anniversary production “Twilight”, later a winning project of Australia Dance Awards. Awarded by Austrian Ministry of Culture, he spent 3 months residency in Vienna, guest lecture in Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Guan was commissioned to create closing piece for AltoFest Malta in conjunction to Valletta as European Cultural Capital 2018. His experiences working in improvisation session with Wuppertal Tanztheater Pina Baush, Folkwang Tanzstudio and Trier Tanztheater in Germany brought him to excel in another level of creation. He has published 11 CD of original music and continues to excel in multidisciplinary contemporary creation.

Guan enjoy working on his creation in the early morning, in the silent environment where he can hear every beat he creates, when he can even hear his vein and heartbeat, is a kind of a natural acoustic for him.
Guan shares his project ‘2020:Timescaper’ which is the last episode of the project 2020, the whole structure of a five years project and how the project relate to ‘time is not linear’ approach, explore a narrative about time travel, clones and time machines.
The project is one of his most unforgettable experience, where he sees how beautiful when people from different fields, professions and cultural background worked together. That makes him so into performance making.

Guan says that creating future is possible. If we collect more futurists’ thinking, we could see how our future look like, and will be more confident to go towards what we want.
Guan believes arts create future. Not just arts but science, people and culture as well. If everything could blend into one, we could get the best result out of it.
As a Malaysian, growing up in a multicultural country helps Guan to adapt and tolerate quickly into different environment when he travel and work abroad in an international environment.
Guan doesn’t see things as traditional or contemporary. To him, it’s more about blending, just like a mix of tastes to create a dish.
Guan believes that everything has its own beauty, but if you blend it in a right way or right time, it’ll just create something even more beautiful.
