Suzy Sulaiman

About her:

Suzy is an artist, designer, wife and mom. Her works often explores intersections of art, architecture and media technology, curious to explore the human social dimensions. Her arts are instruments that dissect locality and unearths new trajectories of relationships between humans and the environment. Suzy is the co-producer for Digital Art + Culture Festival (DA+C) and Japan Foundation Asia Centre Fellow in 2015. Suzy curated ‘Merata Suara: Voices of the Marginalized’ for Projek Dialog supported by the Australian High Commision and joined “Namamahay” artist-in-residency project curated by Dayang Yroala for Balles Artes Project in Bataan, The Philippines. Her sound art installation “Jungle of Nusa” was selected as a General Prize winner for YouFab Global Creative Awards 2019 in Tokyo, Japan in early 2020.

Suzy thinks her work as a tool to put in certain place, and she likes to see how it changes people’s behavior. She uses different media as a friendly interface that people are comfortable with, and people’s reaction gives her work honest critics.

It is always the site that inspired Suzy. She can see the image that she wants to create and she finds a way to get there. Sometimes, site-specific is a challenge.
Suzy thinks that 3 most important traits to be an artist are: Stubbornness, to have your creative output and to protect your belief and principle.
Suzy thinks that multidisciplinary is the practice now. Artworks are done by collectives, they don’t have to necessarily have arts background, but come together to create projects.
Suzy says that we are so globally connected, that we should look for the bigger picture.
Suzy’s advice is to be able to work with a team. Teamwork is important. Having good time management, be on time for meetings, build things together and having creative discussion together are how it works.
