C. S. Stone Shih
The Spirit of The Arts And The Spread of Taiwanese Popular Music In The Nanyang Region
This discussion will begin by talking about Shih’s latest book, Exploring the Spirituality of Art: Walter Benjamin, Georg Lukács and Yangmu, discussing the artists and their potential to bring truth and beauty into reality via different senses and philosophies — from the mystical to the ideal and the classical, even when they are constantly facing with conflicts between their inner and outer worlds.
He will focus on the Taiwanese pop musicians and music groups popular in the 60s to the 80s in Singapore and Malaysia, such as Hsu Shih’s ‘Hsu Family Chinese Folk Singers’ and the Wisma Theatre in Singapore, playing some of their vinyl records to present to the Nanyang audience a chance to revisit unique memories and artworks in the history of the sinosphere.
