Dr. Wu Rung-Shun
Ethnomusicology, A Fashionable Tradition: Literature, Fieldwork, And Sound
Ethnomusicology as a field of study began in the 1950s; it is a music-centric research founded on the basis of field work, later combined with the values of ethnology and anthropology, becoming a fashionable tradition, a unique field that comprises of both external and internal forms of analysis.
The systematic archiving and study of Taiwanese traditional music also began in the late 60s, beginning from the exotic treatment of folk music in field work, to the contemporary methods of folk evaluation; a systematic study of Taiwanese music and culture is hence established.
In the face of globalisation and the new age of the internet, ethnomusicology is coming up against new issues, methods and ways of thinking. Dr. Wu will approach this serious topic with a light hand, responding to commonalities in the futures of Taiwan and Malaysia.
