(sub)LIMINAL: Trance in Contemporary Performance is about looking at the visual depiction of trance experience and the inner states of trance. This project engages visual artist and performance makers who have participated in the bull trance rituals in MAPFest (Malacca Art and Performance Festival), Malaysia and the Bantengan Trance Carnival 2019 in Indonesia.
Traversing space and time, artists are to create their personal mapping of their experience in the Bantengan ritual through short films. These collective memories will be reworked and transmitted through the form of mental images in the finale performance of MAPFest.
By projecting self-autonomous narratives that navigates space, these mental images acts as a catalyst for the bodies to leap between memories, the inner self, ego and persona, in recreating and unfolding the internal imagination of oneself.
